Comprehensive Psychological Assessments for Accurate Diagnosis

At our practice, we conduct a wide range of psychological and psychoeducational assessments throughout the year. These evaluations are designed to identify a child’s academic and emotional strengths and challenges. Typically, a teacher, pediatrician, or parent notices an area of concern in behavior or school performance, prompting further investigation. Testing is recommended whenever a child begins to struggle socially, emotionally, or academically.

The exception is gifted placement screening, which is often conducted without an active concern. In Broward County, placement in certain advanced academic programs is based on the results of psychological testing.

Psychological evaluations can also be administered to clarify emotional disorders, provide career clarification, workplace needs and more.

When Evaluations Should Begin

As licensed psychologists, we can assess children at any age. Early evaluation is key for developmental and social communication conditions such as Autism and spectrum disorders. For attention-related or behavioral concerns, early intervention is also highly beneficial.

Academic testing generally becomes more accurate around age six, although younger evaluations are available when needed. Assessments may include measures of:

  • Intellectual Quotient (IQ) and cognitive functioning
  • Learning disability (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalcula) screening
  • Verbal reasoning and comprehension
  • Reading development
  • Spelling and writing
  • Mathematical reasoning
  • Memory
  • Executive functioning (including organization, planning, and time management)
  • Gifted or high level abilities

Outcomes and Support Following Testing

Each evaluation provides detailed conclusions, recommendations, and diagnostic clarity. Results allow all members of a child’s or an adult’s support network, from parents to medical and school professionals, to work together for intervention, remediation and positive change.

Based on findings, your child may qualify for academic resources such as an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or other support services. Recommendations may address:

  • Homework support
  • Behavioral reinforcement systems
  • Tutoring guidelines
  • Customized strategies for learning and development

If a concern exists, or even if parents feel one may be emerging, beginning the evaluation process early is one of the best ways to help young people reach their full potential.

What Can Affect Academic Performance?
School challenges may be linked to a variety of factors, including:

  • Memory concerns
  • Low motivation
  • Ineffective study habits
  • Social difficulties
  • Emotional challenges
  • Reduced self-esteem
  • ADD or ADHD
  • Gifted placement needs
  • Learning disabilities
  • Psychological and psychoeducational testing needs
  • Behavioral struggles
  • General academic issues
  • Comprehensive professional evaluations
  • Attachment disorders
  • Learning Disabilities / Dyslexia

Identifying Strengths as Well as Challenges
Testing helps pinpoint the exact difficulties that may be holding a student back while also highlighting the areas where they excel. Many students who struggle academically thrive in other areas, such as:

  • Art
  • Athletics
  • Mechanical ability
  • Social skills

Recognizing these strengths is essential. It ensures that school challenges do not overshadow a student’s confidence, drive, and natural talents. Understanding each child’s unique profile helps nurture self-esteem and future success in both academics and career development.

Understanding Learning Disorders

Learning disabilities are conditions that affect critical cognitive processes involved in language and academic skills. They may interfere with reading, writing, mathematics or expressive language, speaking, thinking, spelling, or mathematics.

Types of specific learning disorders include:

Dyslexia

Challenges with reading, spelling, writing, letter sequencing, phonemics, fluency, comprehension and pronunciation.

Aphasia

Dyscalculia

Dysgraphia

Dyspraxia

Auditory or Visual Processing Disorders

Short and Long-Term Memory Weaknesses

Each individual experiences a different combination of strengths and challenges. Frequently, there is a noticeable gap between overall intelligence and actual academic performance. Early, targeted intervention can significantly improve academic progress, emotional well-being, and long-term self-confidence.

Accurate Diagnosis and Effective Recommendations
We dedicate ourselves to providing thorough evaluations and informed treatment recommendations so that children and adults receive the support they need to succeed. Psychological testing often marks the beginning of finding meaningful answers to longstanding challenges and opens the door to productive life changes.

Academic Accommodations for Students
Educational evaluations can also help students receive formal accommodations to create an equitable learning environment, including:

  • Extended time on standardized tests (SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, FAST, and more)
  • Quiet testing environments
  • Use of calculators or written formulas.
  • Assistance such as word processors for writing tasks or oral readers.
  • Course substitutions or modified academic requirements
